Falsity claim advances in Ohio redistricting fight

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Republican Party has won the latest round of sparring over campaign statements about Ohio's Issue 2, a redistricting plan before voters.

The proposal would give political map-drawing powers to a 12-person citizen commission instead of state and federal elected officials.

A panel of the Ohio Elections Commission found probable cause Monday that a statement by proponents of the amendment is false. Voters First had claimed that "politicians, lobbyists and political insiders" would be prohibited from a panel created under the proposed plan to draw new legislative and congressional maps.

The GOP suffered a similar blow in September, when the elections panel found fault with some of its campaign statements. A settlement averted further hearings.

The commission threw out a subsequent false-statements claim against the party Monday.
