AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers, the top cops in the Lone Star State, are getting to the bottom of a new case: Who's behind a series of tweets lampooning a local city council.
The parody Twitter accounts target council members in Huntsville, home to the nation's busiest execution chamber. One of the confessed tweeters says it's political parody. But a local prosecutor thinks the accounts could be criminal and asked the Rangers to investigate.
That's absurd to some constitutional experts, who say the tweets are a cut-and-dry case of First Amendment protections. The investigation is ongoing.
Few badges pack more lore than those of the Texas Rangers. Tom Vinger, a spokesman for the Texas Rangers, says that the Rangers have invested only "a matter of hours so far."
