HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas man whose lawyers said he was mentally ill and incompetent for execution has been put to death for killing a 12-year-old girl more than a decade ago.

Forty-four-year-old Jonathan Green received lethal injection Wednesday night, after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal to spare him from punishment. Green was condemned for abducting, raping and strangling of Christina Neal, whose body was found at his home in June 2000. Christina's family lived across a highway from Green in Dobbin, about 45 miles northwest of Houston.

Green's execution was stopped by a federal judge Monday, but Texas state attorneys persuaded an appeals court to lift that reprieve.

Green's attorneys argued he suffered from hallucinations and an earlier competency hearing for him was unfair.
