WASHINGTON (AP) — Maryland health department officials are now reporting 13 meningitis cases linked to a spinal steroid injection for back pain.

The state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene updated its totals on Thursday. A spokeswoman says the number of cases has risen to 13, with one death.

The federal government says 170 people nationwide now have been sickened in the meningitis outbreak. Of those, 14 have died.

The outbreak has been linked to tainted steroid shots. The shots have been recalled by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts that sent them to 23 states.
