Long Beach cracks down on marijuana dispensaries

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Long Beach police have made more than 40 arrests in a crackdown on medical marijuana clinics.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram (http://bit.ly/SS7ST0 ) says police and federal drug agents raided seven pot dispensary sites Wednesday afternoon.

It's the latest and possibly the largest raid on Long Beach collectives since a ban took effect in August.

City officials decided to prohibit the marijuana outlets after a court ruling said they couldn't regulate them.

While Californians passed a law in 1996 that legalized some medical marijuana possession and use, it remains an illegal drug under federal law.
