WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service says Doug Shulman, who has headed the tax agency for more than four years, will step down next month.
Shulman was appointed to head the agency by former President George W. Bush, and as IRS commissioner played a major role in carrying out the 2009 economic stimulus package promoted by President Barack Obama.
As commissioner, he also oversaw IRS campaigns to stop offshore tax evasion and ensure that tax preparers are ethical and competent.
Steven Miller, a 25-year veteran of the IRS, will serve as acting head of the agency until the president nominates a new commissioner.
