GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (AP) — Fire officials say a southern Ohio man helped get a young woman out of a burning mobile home and then went inside to pull her 3-year-old child to safety through the smoke.

The state fire marshal's office said the 20-year-old woman and her child are alive because of the heroic actions of Christopher Williams, who noticed heavy smoke coming from the mobile home in Gallipolis at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Williams banged on the doors to wake up the family and forced open a door to get the woman out. Then he went inside, spotted the woman's 3-year-old son in the smoke and got him out. They were treated by a crew at the scene but did not require hospitalization.

The home was destroyed. The cause is under investigation.
