NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say the man suspected of fatally slashing a 25-year-old youth soccer coach in one of New York City's busiest neighborhoods has fled to Mexico.

The suspect was identified by a law enforcement official as Orlando Orea and apparently fled on an Aero Mexico flight bound for Mexico City on Tuesday, two days after the killing. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Michael Jones was slashed in the neck and torso on the street on Sunday.

Jones was seen arguing with a man in Manhattan's Union Square at around 4:30 a.m. Police were called to the bloody scene where Jones lay on the street. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Jones was a youth coach with the New York Red Bulls professional soccer team.
