LA councilman won't run again, focusing on cancer

Monday October 8, 2012 9:45 PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl says he won't seek a third term so that he can focus on fighting cancer.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/Q9j1L4 ) a statement will be sent to constituents early Tuesday to announce Rosendahl wants voters to elect his longtime chief of staff, Mike Bonin, for his office.

Rosendahl has represented coastal communities from Westchester to Pacific Palisades, and became a vocal advocate for medical marijuana dispensaries after his diagnosis with cancer of the ureter.

Rosendahl had vowed to run again, but endorsed Bonin Monday.

Bonin says he plans to declare his candidacy officially on Tuesday.

At least three others have announced plans to run for Rosendahl's seat, including former legislative analyst Mark Ryavec. Ryavec has been critical of Rosendahl's handling of homelessness in Venice.
