JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Department of Public Safety says more than 1,800 pounds of prescription medication were turned in during recent statewide disposal events across the state.

The events, held Sept. 29, were part of a nationwide effort coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The idea behind the event is to prevent the abuse or theft of pills, accidental poisonings and environmental damage to waterways.

Alaskans turned in more than a ton of prescription medication at a disposal event in April.
