NEW YORK (AP) — David Chase has returned with his first work since "The Sopranos" went black.

The director premiered his debut film, "Not Fade Away," at the New York Film Festival on Friday ahead of its red carpet gala Saturday. The 1960s rock 'n' roll drama is set around a suburban teenager in New Jersey, whose garage band aspires to be the next Rolling Stones. It's an ambition at odds with his traditional Italian father, played by former "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini.

The film is soundtracked by Chase's favorite rock songs. Chase calls it "a compilation album."

Paramount Vantage will release "Not Fade Away" on Dec. 21.

Chase created and produced "The Sopranos." The mob drama was a huge hit for HBO. It ended its original run in 2007.
