ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New Yorkers getting a new driver's license will have to make a choice about whether to be an organ donor, a measure meant to boost sign-ups.
A bill signed into law Thursday will change the language about organ donation for those applying for a license or identification card. They can currently ignore the question.
Under the change, effective in one year, applications will say they must fill out the section on joining the donor registry, marking it to either say yes or to skip the question.
Officials say that about 113,000 people, including 9,700 New Yorkers, are on the national waiting list for organ transplants.
