PARASAILING: DEADLY ACCIDENTS, FEW REGULATION - More than 70 people have been killed in parasailing accidents, but efforts to regulate the activity remain stalled.

MENINGITIS OUTBREAK CONTINUES - The number of people sickened by a meningitis outbreak has risen again to 47. Cases exist in seven states: Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The number of deaths from the outbreak remains at five.

AMERICAN AIRLINES PASSENGERS REBOOKING AND DELAYED - A combination of wear, poor design and even soda spilled into the tracks can cause seats on its Boeing 757s to pop loose during flight. The airline has had to cancel many flights, while it fixes the problem. Passengers in Denver are worried by the cancelations and passengers in Miami say multiple cancelations on the same itinerary ruined their travel plans. Analyst Michael Boyd says this is entirely a maintenance issue and has happened before.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 7.8 PERCENT - The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent for the first time in nearly four years. President Barack Obama says an encouraging jobs report shows that the country has made too much progress to turn back to the policies that he says led the nation into an economic crisis. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says the country's economic outlook remains weak despite the new jobless figures. He says too many Americans are unemployed or underemployed.

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN - President Obama and presidential candidate Romney are campaigning in Virginia, Ohio and Florida.

OBAMA: ROMNEY OWES AMERICA THE TRUTH - President Barack Obama says GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is willing to crackdown on Sesame Street before he'll crackdown on Wall Street. The comments come after Romney said he would defund PBS, which airs Sesame Street.

RYAN: LAST NIGHT WE SAW A CLEAR PICTURE - Buoyed by GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's strong performance in Wednesday night's debate, Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan told voters in Virginia that they are finally seeing a clear choice for America's next president.

PENTAGON: TURKEY HAS A RIGHT TO DEFEND ITSELF - Pentagon spokesman George Little says the U.S. military respects Turkey's right to defend itself, in response to a reporter's questions about a skirmish between Turkish and Syrian forces on the countries' shared border.

CA, GAS PRICES JUMP - Gasoline prices rose by as much as 20 cents per gallon in some areas. In many places, gas prices jumped as much as 40 cents per gallon in one week. What is causing the rise in gas prices? Will the increases continue?

TN, FAMILY: MENINGITIS PATIENT ON GOOD PATH - The family of a Tennessee women who is in intensive care with meningitis says she has some blood on her brain, but is conscious and on a good path for recovery.

WA, WESTERN WASHINGTON FIRE NOT CONTAINED - A new wildfire southwest of Seattle has burned 150 acres and is threatening at least a dozen homes. The fire began Thursday. It is 30 percent contained.

WI, INDIAN DELEGATION VISITS WISCONSIN SIKH TEMPLE - A high level delegation from India visited the Wisconsin Sikh temple where six worshippers were shot dead in August.

TX, SCHOOL BUS PLUNGES FROM TEXAS OVERPASS - Three adults and one child were hurt in San Antonio, Texas, when a school bus plunged from an overpass and fell about 15 feet.

MI, SOLDIER WHO LOST 4 LIMBS BACK IN MICH. HOMETOWN - A soldier who lost all four limbs in Afghanistan returns to his Michigan hometown. Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, his wife, Kelsey, and their 1-year-old daughter, Chloe, are the Vassar High School homecoming parade grand marshals.

MA, CAROLINE KENNEDY: JFK LIBRARY PICASSO WONDERFUL - A painting by Pablo Picasso has come to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Caroline Kennedy unveiled the painting.

PROTEST AGAINST THE USE OF DRONES BY THE US, LED BY IMRAN KHAN - A group of American anti-war activists are in Pakistan to join a march into the country's tribal belt to protest U.S. drone strikes in the rugged northwest territory.

AMERICAN TOURIST OPENS FIRE IN ISRAEL - A young American opened fire at a hotel in the Red Sea resort city of Eilat, killing one person before police shot him dead.

TURKISH SOLDIERS PATROL BORDER NEAR SYRIA - Turkish forces were deployed at the border with Syria, a day after parliament approved a bill authorizing military operations beyond the Turkish border.

ACTIVISTS SAY SYRIAN WARPLANES POUND HOMS - Syrian warplanes and artillery pounded the central city of Homs, subjecting the former rebel stronghold to its worst bombardment in months, activists said.

CAMBODIA'S GOURMET INSECTS - Eating insects first became widespread in Cambodia when people were starving under the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1970s. Today the practice has become so popular that many top-end restaurants have insects on the menu.

CUSTOMIZED CANCER CARE - A new way of growing tumors in labs may help researchers customize cancer care. "Mini tumors" would undergo various drug and chemotherapy treatments before patients, which could save those fighting cancer time and pain.

GEORGIA GIVING CHILDREN COMPUTERS - Children starting school in Georgia this year are receiving computers they can take home with them. It's hoped the netbooks will promote the idea that learning can be fun

EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY ANNIVERSARY - The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is celebrating its 50th birthday today. Since 1962 the ESO has provided research facilities to astronomers as well as building the world's largest telescope to monitor the heavens in Chile.
