OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Health Department says there have been no cases reported in the state of a rare and deadly form of meningitis.
Spokesman Donn Moyer says epidemiologists are watching for the disease.
It has sickened 26 people in five states — 18 in Tennessee. The other states are Virginia, Maryland, Florida and North Carolina. Four people have died in the outbreak. All received steroid injections, mostly for back pain.
This type of meningitis is caused by a fungus that health officials suspect may have been in the steroid.
The drug was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts that issued a recall last week.
