DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — City officials in Dayton are spending $875,000 to tear down 80 vacant houses and buildings.
But, the officials say, that will barely put a dent in the 7,000 abandoned structures in the city. Deputy City Manager Shelley Dickstein said the goal is to tear down 150 of them this year.
On average, it costs the city $10,000 to demolish a vacant structure.
The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/SrZLwf ) reports that the money comes from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The expenditure was approved by city commissioners Wednesday.
