Fundraiser describes payoffs to ex-Detroit mayor

Thursday October 4, 2012 12:00 PM

DETROIT (AP) — A fundraiser for Kwame Kilpatrick has told jurors that she gave the then-Detroit mayor thousands of dollars that were supposed to go to his political campaign or a nonprofit fund.

Emma Bell testified Thursday in Kilpatrick's corruption trial. She admitted turning over more than $200,000 to him, typically in amounts of less than $10,000.

Bell's deals with Kilpatrick are part of the government's broad case against the ex-mayor. He's charged with fraud, tax crimes, bribery and conspiracy. Kilpatrick's father and two other people are also on trial.

On Wednesday, a day ahead of Bell's testimony, jurors learned about her warts, including a gambling habit and tax evasion. She pleaded guilty a year ago and agreed to testify against Kilpatrick.
