HANFORD, Calif. (AP) — An Amtrak official says the crossing gate was down when a big rig hit a passenger train at a Central Valley railroad crossing, derailing the train and injuring dozens of people.
Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said Tuesday that lights at the crossing were flashing and bells ringing during Monday afternoon's crash south of Hanford.
Investigators plan to look into the big rig driver's state as well as the condition of the truck.
Graham said 39 people were injured. Authorities have described the injuries as mostly bumps and bruises although Graham said at least one person suffered a broken leg.
The track, meanwhile, reopened Tuesday morning. BNSF Railway spokeswoman Lena Kent said crews had to replace hundreds of feet of damaged track and some signal equipment. BNSF owns the line.
