DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has suspended the city's police chief following allegations the married police chief was in a relationship with a subordinate.

An attorney for the female internal affairs officer tells the Detroit Free Press that Chief Ralph Godbee and the woman had been in a relationship that she eventually tried to end.

David Robinson says the officer "was trying to cut it off" and Godbee "didn't like that."

Godbee and Robinson to return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Bing said in a statement Tuesday that he suspended Godbee "after hearing of the allegations," but the statement didn't specify what the allegations were. He says Godbee has been placed on a 30-day suspension pending an investigation.

Assistant Chief Chester Logan will assume Godbee's responsibilities during the suspension.
