Ohio community college students protest cuts

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Students at a southeastern Ohio community college have taken to the streets to protest upcoming employee layoffs at the school.

About 40 students in Hocking College's Public Safety Services program stood in front of the college's administrative building Monday chanting "No more cuts!" The Logan Daily News (http://bit.ly/Waa9r1) reports the students were especially upset about the firing of the popular dean of their academic program.

The Nelsonville college announced last week that it will cut 23 jobs on Nov. 2. The move is an attempt to balance the 2013 budget and help deal with a $4.3 million deficit.

Hocking College President Ron Erickson has said that the budget shortfall is due to a decrease in enrollment.
