COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — Law enforcement officers in northern Idaho say they have at least five crime scenes to examine after a downtown shootout in Coeur d'Alene left one man dead and another injured.

The suspect was shot and killed Saturday after opening fire on police officers. His name has not yet been released.

Kootenai County sheriff's Maj. Ben Wolfinger said it's not clear what prompted the shooting. The suspect reportedly shot one man in the chest before fleeing in a car, shooting at bystanders as he fled. Wolfinger says the suspect ultimately lost control of the car and exchanged gunfire with officers. He died at the scene.

The man who was shot in the chest was taken to an area hospital for surgery.

Coeur d'Alene is about 30 miles east of Spokane, Wash.
