Akron Marathon: $5M economic impact for city

Saturday September 29, 2012 10:00 AM

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The 10th annual Akron Marathon provides a lot of economic punch for the Rubber City.

The latest edition of the Akron Marathon kicked off just after dawn Saturday with fireworks and music.

There also was a half-marathon and five-member relay teams. The finish line was at Canal Park Stadium in downtown Akron.

Organizers were prepared for 15,000 runners.

If this year's race matches last year's economic impact, it will mean more than $5 million for the city.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal (bit.ly/P1WPW4), more than 3,000 volunteers help run the marathon.
