Old prescription drugs being collected Saturday

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Law enforcement agencies statewide are teaming up Saturday to collect expired, unwanted and unused prescription drugs for safe disposal.

Collection sites will be set up around the state, mostly at pharmacy locations, for the "National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day."

People can drop off their unused prescription drugs, with no questions asked.

It's an effort that was launched a few years ago to stem the abuse of prescription medications and prevent overdoses.

In Washoe County, authorities say they've collected more than 750,000 prescription pills since 2009.

Nationally, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency says more than 1.5 million pounds, or 774 tons, of prescription drugs have been removed from circulation.
