SAN DIEGO (AP) — A suspect in a child abuse case has been charged with attempted murder in a gun battle that seriously wounded two sheriff's deputies in Southern California.

U-T San Diego (bit.ly/PJfNxJ) reports that Daniel Witczak pleaded not guilty Thursday from his bed at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. The 30-year-old was wounded in Monday's shootout with police at his apartment in suburban Lakeside.

He was charged with three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer after three shots were fired at the deputies and a California Highway Patrol officer, who was not injured. Sheriff Bill Gore has said he is optimistic the deputies will fully recover.
