FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) — The Army's largest training installation in South Carolina is spending time instructing soldiers, staff and families on how to prevent suicides.
Fort Jackson spokesman Pat Jones says Thursday's sessions are part of an Army-wide focus on the issue.
The nation's largest military service reported a record 38 suicides in July.
The training designed to help troops select appropriate strategies for identifying suicidal behaviors. The training also helps soldiers find ways to get help, or help their fellow soldiers seek assistance.
Army officials point out that the issue is not one that afflicts only soldiers who have experienced combat. Fifty-four percent of service members who committed suicide in 2010 had never deployed.
