COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio sheriff has apologized after a photo surfaced of his county-owned car parked in a handicap-parking spot at the county fairgrounds.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/TFRCp5 ) reports that Republicans released the photo of the car belonging to Democratic Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott parked at the Columbus fairgrounds.

Scott said he must not have seen the signs marking the spot when he parked there. He called it an honest mistake.

Republican Party officials said that someone snapped the picture on a cellphone and later shared it with Mike Herrell, Scott's Republican opponent in the fall election.

Herrell took Scott to task for breaking any law, no matter how minor.
