FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — Fort Campbell is holding suicide prevention training and other events this week as part of the Army's Suicide Prevention Month to educate soldiers, their families and civilians on how to spot the warning signs of suicide.
Erin Stattel, a spokeswoman for the installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line, said there have been 12 confirmed suicides at Fort Campbell so far this year. The Army has struggled for years to address rising suicide rates. In 2009, 21 soldiers committed suicide at Fort Campbell.
On Thursday and Friday, the post will have a "Suicide Stand Up" event within the units to teach soldiers about applied suicide intervention skills. On Saturday, families and civilians are invited to participate in a wellness walk.
