INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Riley Hospital for Children officials say the hospital's emergency room has been closed after some employees fell ill from exposure to an unknown substance.

The hospital said in a statement that a "handful" of employees became ill Thursday after being exposed to the unknown substance. That statement said the situation involving the substance had been contained.

Hospital spokesman Gene Ford said he did not know how many hospital employees had been effected or what time the incident had occurred.

WTHR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/PIwg5g ) firefighters traced the source to a patient's bag in the emergency room, but they were still working to identify the substance.

Patients needing emergency services were being directed to other IU Health hospitals or Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.
