ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of an upstate New York animal hospice once praised by Oprah Winfrey says she's shutting it down as the state attorney general announces a lawsuit accusing her of misusing funds.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wednesday his office has sued Angel's Gate and chief executive Susan Marino for persistently failing to file the financial reports required of charitable organizations.
Marino ran a hospice for chronically ill and crippled dogs and cats. Donations poured in after she was featured on Winfrey's TV show in 2008.
Marino also faces cruelty charges stemming from an undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
She says she's finding new homes for 180 cats and a handful of dogs remaining at the facility in Delhi, 60 miles southwest of Albany.
