ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A Republican New York senator who voted to legalize gay marriage last year has apparently lost a GOP primary.
With all votes counted and barring a total recount order, Republican Kathleen Marchione (mahr-SHEE'-ohn) has a 113-vote edge over Sen. Roy McDonald with just 50 votes that still can be contested.
Elections official John Marcellus says a judge needs to certify the vote for it to be official.
In the face of opposition to his vote last year, McDonald publicly said that if critics wanted to fire him for his difficult vote of conscience, "they can take this job and shove it."
Of the three other Republican senators who crossed party lines and voted for gay marriage, two have won GOP challenges and one retired amid strong opposition over his vote.
