PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Bristol County woman has been diagnosed with meningitis from a West Nile infection, the third human case of the virus in the state this year.
The Rhode Island Department of Health said Tuesday that the woman is recovering. Officials said only that she is in her 60s.
Rhode Island's first human case was in a Newport County man in his 50s who had West Nile fever. The second case was a man in his 20s from Providence County, who was diagnosed with meningitis.
Five pools of mosquitoes in the state have tested positive for West Nile this season.
Health Department Director Michael Fine says Rhode Islanders should remain vigilant about protecting themselves from mosquito bites. The threat of mosquito-borne illnesses persists until the first hard frost.
