North Carolina says Roy Williams' surgically removed kidney tumor was not cancerous.

In a statement Tuesday, the school says tests have determined it is a benign growth that is often indistinguishable from kidney cancer on X-rays and doesn't spread like a cancerous tumor would.

Williams also has a tumor on his left kidney, but according to the school, doctors say there is "a good chance" that growth is the same as the one removed last week. Doctors plan to biopsy that tumor next week and won't perform a second surgery if the tumor is the same.

The school has said Williams is expected to be back for the start of preseason practice.
