DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors are going right to the money in the first day of evidence at former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's corruption trial.
The jury on Monday saw a $4,000 cash deposit slip used by Kilpatrick in January 2005. An Internal Revenue Service agent says the government traced more than $500,000 in cash transactions between 2001 and 2008.
Kilpatrick is charged with fraud, bribery, tax crimes and a racketeering conspiracy. His father, a Detroit contractor and the city's former water boss are also on trial in Detroit federal court. Jurors heard opening statements Friday. The trial could stretch into 2013.
Kilpatrick quit the mayor's office in 2008 in an unrelated scandal.
