CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Students at Oregon State University in Corvallis started their school year this week on an entirely smoke-free campus.
KGW-TV reports (http://is.gd/MSJ3A5 ) that smoking had been prohibited inside buildings. Now, smokers must go outside the campus boundaries if they want to light up. A group of students started pushing for the ban about five years ago.
OSU estimates about 1,400 of its 30,000 students and staff members are smokers.
A university spokeswoman says OSU has been educating staff and students about the change for some time. Those who are caught lighting up on campus risk a $30 fine.
