LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A condemned Ohio killer who shot two men he didn't know in 1989 apologized to their families shortly before he was executed.
The widows and daughters of the men killed by Donald Palmer wept during Thursday's execution and said afterward the apology was too little, too late.
The 47-year-old Palmer was declared dead at 10:35 a.m., 15 minutes after a lethal dose of pentobarbital was administered.
Palmer was convicted of aggravated murder in the May 8, 1989, shooting deaths of Charles Sponhaltz and Steven Vargo along a Belmont County road in eastern Ohio.
Both of the married fathers were strangers to Palmer, and both were shot twice in the head.
