Ohio prisons department pays $2M in head-on crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's prisons department has agreed to pay $2 million to settle a claim over a head-on collision caused by one of its employees that left a man with "catastrophic" injuries.

The Court of Claims of Ohio announced last week's settlement on Friday.

According to a 2011 complaint against the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Elliott Bush of Gambier sustained nearly 30 injuries, including numerous fractures in the crash.

The court filing says state employee Douglas Schlefer crossed over the centerline on Knox County road, striking Bush's car on Jan. 7, 2010.

The complaint cites "carelessness and negligence" and attributed them to driver inattention, driving too fast for conditions, failure to control and failure to yield.

A prisons spokeswoman declined to comment.
