ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a man has died after spending the night hanging upside down when he got stuck rappelling in Utah's Zion National Park.

The park says the man and a partner went on the popular Subway canyoneering route on Tuesday but were unfamiliar with the area.

The victim, whose name has not been released, caught his foot while rappelling and was unable to free it.

His partner was unable to free him and got disoriented while trying to make it out the canyon. The partner made it out on Wednesday morning and alerted park rangers for help.

The Subway is a narrow slot canyon in the Kolob Terrace section of the southern Utah park.
