US futures follow global markets lower

Thursday September 20, 2012 8:30 AM

NEW YORK (AP) — Futures are sliding as disquieting economic data from Europe and Asia and the prospect of more likely from the U.S. later in the day pressured global markets.

Dow Jones industrial futures are down 39 points to 13,458. The broader S&P futures are down 4.5 points to 1,448.70. Nasdaq futures have lost 7.25 points to hit 2,846.25.

A day after announcing aggressive measures to revive exports, Japan posted a $9.6 billion trade deficit as shipments to beleaguered Europe and Asia shrivel.

Economists were surprised Thursday when financial data company Markit said its purchasing managers' index, a gauge for European Union business activity, slid.

New data from the Conference Board is expected to show a lackluster first half of the year in the U.S.
