PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — There are now more places to securely dispose of prescription medication in New Jersey.
Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa (KEE'-ay-sah) on Thursday announced the expansion of "Product Medicine Drop" to all 21 counties.
There are now 27 secure metal containers statewide where residents can get rid of their medications at police departments, sheriff's offices and State Police barracks.
The program is aimed at keeping drugs, especially powerful prescription painkillers, out of reach of people who might abuse, steal or sell it.
Officials also do not want prescription drugs to end up in landfills or waterways.
Morristown-based Covanta Energy will destroy the drugs at no cost to the state.
