WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior administration official says President Barack Obama will meet privately with Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the White House Wednesday.

Suu Kyi is on a 17-day trip to the U.S. The Nobel Peace laureate spent 15 years under house arrest for opposing military rule in the country also known as Burma.

Myanmar has opened up over the past two years since Suu Kyi's release. As a result, the U.S. normalized diplomatic relations with Myanmar and in July allowed U.S. companies to start investing there again.

The official requested anonymity in order to discuss the meeting before it was announced publicly.
