Ohio college: $4.3M shortfall will force layoffs

Tuesday September 18, 2012 6:45 AM

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A small, southeast Ohio college says it might lay off workers as early as Oct. 1 to cope with a $4.3 million budget shortfall.

Officials at Hocking College in Nelsonville tell The Athens Messenger (http://bit.ly/O9zJwP ) fall enrollment is about 1,300 fewer students than last year, and that's hurting the budget. They wouldn't say how many workers will be affected by the layoffs, but they plan to evaluate jobs across the campus.

The layoffs were mentioned in a Sunday letter from college President Ron Erickson.

Faculty union president Mark Yanko says the letter put workers on edge but didn't offer details. He noted the cuts come after recent pay raises for some administrators.

A more specific plan for cuts is expected to be presented to the college trustees next week.
