Police: Woman's raffle for cancer victim was scam

Monday September 17, 2012 4:30 PM

CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Varnville woman who told people she was running a raffle to raise money for a cancer victim was actually using the cash to pay for her recent divorce.

Chapin police said 53-year-old Donna Winn was arrested on Saturday and charged with nine counts of obtaining goods under false pretense.

Investigators say a Chapin business owner called police after becoming suspicious after hearing her story.

Authorities didn't release how much money was collected and say anyone who bought a raffle ticket from her needs to contact police.

Winn was released from the Lexington County jail on a $2,000 bond. It wasn't clear if she had a lawyer, and a phone number for her has been disconnected.
