WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has approved applications from 29 young illegal immigrants hoping to avoid deportation and get a work permit.

Earlier this week the Department of Homeland Security started notifying immigrants who had won the reprieve. Some applications were approved less than a month after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services started accepting applications for the program first announced June 15.

Peter Boogaard, a DHS spokesman, says as of Friday the USCIS had received about 82,000 applications.
