PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — State officials say a kitten in Jamestown has tested positive for rabies and that other animals and possibly humans may have been exposed.
The Rhode Island health and environmental management departments said Wednesday that the kitten, which has died, was found near Highland Drive and Fort Wetherill State Park. It had been adopted by a Jamestown resident last month. Officials said cats living in the same feral colony may also be infected.
State Veterinarian Scott Marshall says other non-vaccinated animals and people may have been exposed without knowing it.
Residents who think they may be at risk should contact the health department. Resident who think their pets have had contact with the animals should call Jamestown police.
State law requires dogs and cats to have current rabies vaccinations.
