BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Australia scrumhalf Will Genia is expected to be sidelined for six months after having surgery to repair the right knee he injured against South Africa in the Rugby Championship last weekend.
The Australian Rugby Union confirmed Wednesday that Genia required a full knee reconstruction after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament. He is the third Wallabies captain to endure a season-ending injury this year.
He will miss Australia's end-of-year tour to Europe and the start of the 2013 Super Rugby campaign for the Queensland Reds.
Nick Phipps has been elevated to Australia's starting XV for Saturday's test against Argentina at the Gold Coast, with veteran Brett Sheehan coming onto the reserves bench.
