Ohio’s Cedar Point blows up venerable ride

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — A crew at Cedar Point has used 10 pounds of explosives to bring down the Space Spiral ride, which has been a staple at the theme park for 47 years.

WTOL-TV (http://bit.ly/RIpWxU) reports that the explosives were detonated near the base to topple the ride’s 330-foot tower Wednesday morning at the Sandusky park. The ride had taken people up in rotating cabins for a bird’s-eye view of Cedar Point since 1965.

Workers calculated precisely where the tower would land and dug a large hole in the fall zone to absorb the impact.

The ride was removed to make way for the park's first winged roller coaster, called GateKeeper. It's scheduled to open next May.
