MESQUITE, Texas (AP) — Neighbors and friends of a 16-year-old girl killed by a man she had reported for rape say she was a friendly, vivacious athlete who kept details about the crime to herself.

Shania Gray disappeared after school Thursday and turned up dead two days later. The man she accused of raping her, 30-year-old Franklin Davis, is charged with capital murder. Davis has confessed the killing to police.

Friends and people in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite remember Gray playing basketball in the family driveway and going out of her way to greet them. Family friend Sherry Ramsey says she didn't know anything about the rape charge until after Gray's disappearance.

Another family friend, Nina Adams, says Gray didn't tell anyone about the alleged rapes at first because Davis had threatened her.
