LONDON (AP) — British writer Hilary Mantel is a finalist for the prestigious Booker literary prize for "Bring Up the Bodies," a tale of politics and passion at the court of King Henry VIII.
The book is a sequel to "Wolf Hall," which won the 50,000 pound ($82,000) prize in 2009.
The prize is open to writers from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth. The shortlist announced by judges on Tuesday includes "The Garden of Evening Mists" by Malaysia's Tan Twan Eng and "Narcopolis" by India's Jeet Thayil.
Three books by British writers round out the list — "Swimming Home," by Deborah Levy; Alison Moore's "The Lighthouse"; and "Umbrella" by Will Self.
The winner will be announced Oct. 16.
