GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A 54-year-old mental patient has received a 40- to 80-year-prison sentence for fatally stabbing an Indianapolis man at a western Michigan motel.
Jack Jacqmain received the sentence Monday in Kent County Circuit Court. On Aug. 13, he pleaded no contest but mentally ill to second-degree murder.
The plea isn't an admission of guilt but allows him to be convicted and sentenced.
Thirty-one-year-old Mark Moore was stabbed to death at a Motel 6 in Walker in August 2010. The married father of two was on a business trip.
Defense lawyer Val Foster tells The Grand Rapids Press that lapses in the mental health system allowed his schizophrenic client to be out on the street and contributed to Moore's death.
Foster says the plea lets Jacqmain get mental health treatment in prison.
