DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An agreement has been reached to hunt all 150 deer and elk at a hunting preserve in southern Iowa where a deer tested positive in July for chronic wasting disease.
The Department of Natural Resources says the Pine Ridge Hunting Lodge in Davis County can conduct hunts previously scheduled in September to Dec. 25. But only clean antlers and the hide will be allowed to leave, and only after samples are collected.
The Davis County deer was the first case of the neurological disease verified in Iowa. Five deer at a breeding center in southwest Iowa have since tested positive. Three of those deer and the Davis County deer were traced to a breeding center in Cerro Gordo County, where another deer tested positive. Both breeding centers are now quarantined.
