NEW YORK (AP) — Shangri La was the Hawaiian paradise of the late philanthropist and art collector Doris Duke.
It was a showcase for the tobacco heiress' lifelong passion of Islamic art and architecture.
Now, artifacts from the house are being shown for the first time outside the Honolulu estate at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. "Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape and Islamic Art" opened Friday and runs through Jan. 6.
Duke collected artifacts from throughout the Islamic world. The earliest piece in the show is a gold jug from the first millennium.
Duke first fell in love with Islamic art and architecture on her honeymoon around the world in 1935. Shangri La was constructed in the 1930s.
The exhibition also will travel to museums in Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, California, Nevada and Hawaii.
